Regarding "The World-Honoured One employed a metaphor […] the lifespan in the hells": this explains the eight cold hells. A khārī holds one hu. A vāha is translated here as a granary basket (shuan), which holds twenty khārīs. The measure of a māṣavāha: this indicates the size of the vāha measure, not intending to take māṣa [as the primary subject], just as one says "a grain basket". The verse says "like one vāha of sesame seeds", indicating taking the sesame seeds within the vāha, just as one says "a basket of grain". Magadha is translated here as "free from harm". Jushang is another name for sesame (huma). Sesame is easily exhausted, while the lifespan is difficult to exhaust, illustrating the length of the lifespan. Hence, chapter four of the *Sūtra on the Arising of the World* (*Lokasthāna-sūtra*), explaining the cold hells, says: "O bhikṣus! Just as by the hu-measure of the country of Kosala, twenty hu filled with sesame seeds, heaped high and not leveled with a strickle; and during that interval, a man, when a full hundred years have passed, takes one sesame seed (as detailed in that sūtra)." From this we know that a khārī is a hu-measure, and twenty khārīs make the measure of one vāha. Paramārtha broadly calculated according to that country, saying: "Twenty khārīs make one vāha, and one vāha contains two hundred and fifty-six hu"—this is incorrect. The remaining text can be understood.
