"The verse says […] inhabited by rākṣasas": this is the fourth, explaining the four continents. Within this: first, explaining the four continents; second, explaining the eight intermediate continents. Indian carts are narrow in front and broad in the back, hence they are cited as an analogy. The bodhisattva's final physical support can sustain this samādhi, and the place of the diamond seat (vajrāsana) can sustain this samādhi, because no other physical support or other location possesses the steadfast strength to sustain this samādhi. The power of this samādhi is great; other physical supports and other locations cannot sustain it. Regarding the eight intermediate continents: Cāmara translates here as 'Yak-tail'; Varacāmara translates here as 'Superior Yak-tail'; Deha translates here as 'Body'; Videha translates here as 'Superior Body'; Śāṭha translates here as 'Deceitful'; Uttaramantrina translates here as 'Superior Council'; Kurava translates here as 'Superior Border'; Kaurava translates here as 'Possessing a Superior Border'. Between the two explanations, the first explanation is correct; thus the Mahāvibhāṣā fascicle 172 says: "The bodies of the people in these eight continents are short and small," like dwarfs in this land. Some say: seven continents are inhabited by humans, while Cāmara Continent is inhabited solely by rākṣasas. Some say: these eight mentioned here are alternative names for the four great continents, because each and every continent has two alternative names. Those who speak in this way should follow the first explanation.
