"Because their capacity is determined […] definitely arises from a different kind": The author of the treatise resolves the objection: Just as barley seeds and the like are determined to be capable of producing that fruit of barley sprouts and the like, and cannot produce other fruits such as paddy sprouts. Therefore it is said that their capacity is determined, and thus there is no fault of indeterminacy. It is like sound definitely arising from different kinds such as the hand, the drum, and so forth. It is like the maturation-transformation of burned objects definitely arising from different kinds such as fuel, fire, and so forth. Or when fuel is burned, from white emerges yellow, from yellow emerges black, and so forth; this is termed definitely arising from a different kind. Another interpretation: He adduces sound and the like in Vaiśeṣika as an analogy. That school holds that among the categories, sound in the category of quality (guṇa) is a quality belonging to space in the category of substance (dravya), arising from space, which is of a different kind. Furthermore, it arises from different kinds within the category of quality, namely conjunction (saṃyoga) and disjunction (vibhāga), as when the conjunction of hand and drum emits sound, or when the disjunction of splitting bamboo emits sound. Maturation-transformation is color-form (rūpa), and color-form is subsumed under the category of quality. This color-form is a quality belonging to fire in the category of substance, arising from fire, which is of a different kind, and also arising from fuel. "And the like" means including other dharmas that arise from different kinds among the categories, thus showing that their assertion contradicts their own teachings.
