12.46

「有餘說彼至不應修苦行」者，敘異說。若先是聖人，不應起戒取而修苦行，以此故知先是異生。餘文可知。

"Regarding 'Others say that they [...] should not cultivate ascetic practices': this recounts an alternative opinion. If one were previously a noble person, one would not give rise to the attachment to rules and rituals and cultivate ascetic practices; through this, it is known that they were previously an ordinary person (pṛthagjana). The remaining text is easily understood.
