"Lest the coarse-object effect arising subsequently should have no seed": The Vaiśeṣika answers: Lest the coarse-object effect arising when the subsequent kalpa forms should be without a seed. They hold that when the kalpa is destroyed, coarse physical objects are destroyed, but the eternal atoms are not destroyed. These eternal atoms are scattered in space, each abiding separately. When the kalpa is about to form, the karmic force of sentient beings causes the eternal atoms to combine in pairs to produce one coarse effect, equal in measure to its parents. The produced coarse effects again each combine in pairs to jointly produce one coarse effect, which is again equal in measure to its parents. In this manner, progressing through pairwise combinations, the great earth and so forth are formed. From the effect produced from two atoms onward, it is called a coarse object. The scattered eternal atoms are called seeds, because they act as seeds for those coarse effects. One should know that the destruction of the kalpa destroys those coarse objects, not the atoms.
