Regarding the passage from "The unwholesome by intrinsic nature..." up to "like poison": this clarifies the unwholesome by intrinsic nature. This is understandable. Question: Among sāsrava phenomena, why are only these five designated as having this intrinsic nature? Explanation: They are distinguished and established because they are predominant. The three unwholesome roots possess five aspects of predominance: namely, they apply across the five sections [of defilements to be abandoned], pervade the six consciousnesses, are of the nature of anusayas, serve as powerful preparations when cutting off the roots of good, and are capable of generating coarse and evil bodily and vocal karma. Non-shame (āhrīkya) and non-embarrassment (anapatrāpya) possess two aspects of predominance: namely, they are exclusively unwholesome and they pervade all unwholesome states. Because the others do not possess these, they are not so established.
