[On the text,] "In the arising of cooked transformations … the destruction of the lower and intermediate stages of cooking": This is the direct refutation. If you stubbornly maintain that fire is the cause when firewood and the like are destroyed, then the substance of the cause of arising would itself become the cause of destruction. For instance, when fire burns firewood, in the arising of cooked transformations there are three different grades—lower, intermediate, and upper: when it first turns yellow, it is called lower; next when black, intermediate; and finally when fully black, upper. The substance of the cause of arising would then become the cause of destruction. Why is that? Because contact between the firewood and the cause that is fire can cause the firewood to undergo three different grades of arising cooked transformations: when the intermediate stage of cooking arises, the lower stage of cooking is destroyed; when the upper stage of cooking arises, the intermediate stage of cooking is destroyed. The cause of the arising of the intermediate stage of cooking would then be the cause of the destruction of the lower stage of cooking, because at the very time the intermediate stage of cooking arises, the lower stage of cooking is destroyed; the cause of the arising of the upper stage of cooking would then be the cause of the destruction of the intermediate stage of cooking, because at the very time the upper stage of cooking arises, the intermediate stage of cooking is destroyed. Therefore it is said that the substance of the cause of arising would itself become the cause of destruction.
