[On the text,] "Is it not that touch and shape … capable of recollecting the color of the flower?": The Sarvāstivāda rescues its doctrine. "Being" means existing together; is it not that touch and shape are both present in a single aggregation? Relying on apprehending the tangible, the mind is able to recollect the shape previously seen; the body does not directly apprehend shape within touch. Therefore, there is no fault of a single rūpa-āyatana being apprehended by two faculties. A metaphor is introduced to illustrate this: like the eye seeing the red color of fire, the mind immediately recollects the heat of fire previously touched; the eye does not directly apprehend touch within color. Again, like the nose smelling the fragrance of a flower, the mind is able to recollect the color of the flower previously seen; the nose does not directly apprehend color within fragrance.
