"Because sentient beings... both things are excellent" is the reply. Because the types of collective and non-collective karma of sentient beings differ, the results they produce are distinct. Either they perform collective pure karma to produce saffron and the like, or they perform collective impure karma to produce poison thorns and the like; or they perform non-collective pure karma to produce an internal pure body, or they perform non-collective impure karma to produce an internal defiled body; or they perform mixed karma to produce an internally defiled and externally pure result, or they perform mixed karma to produce an internally pure and externally defiled result; or they perform purely impure karma to produce results that are both internally and externally defiled, or they perform purely pure karma to produce results that are both internally and externally pure. All this is due to differences in karma, which is why the experienced results are diverse. By this principle, if one creates mixed karma, the experienced result is internally defiled and externally pure. To serve as an antidote to that internal bodily impurity, external forms and the like are produced that are extremely pleasant; therefore, they cannot be equated uniformly with saffron and the like. If the devas and the like create purely pure karma, the experienced results are both internally and externally excellent. The terms 'mixed karma' and 'pure karma' mean: producing pure and defiled results is called mixed, while producing solely pure results is called pure. Alternatively, a mixture of wholesome and unwholesome karma is called mixed, while solely wholesome karma is called pure. Alternatively, the wholesome karma performed by humans and the like is weak and inferior, and afflictions are strong and increasing, frequently mixed and overpowered by afflictions, hence called mixed; while in performing the wholesome karma of devas, although afflictions still arise, the wholesome is superior and the unwholesome is inferior, so it obtains the designation 'pure'.
