"As stated in the sūtra... then one becomes an upāsaka" begins the fourth section below, explaining the upāsaka restraint. First, explaining the time when the precepts arise; second, harmonizing and explaining the sūtra text; third, explaining the three grades of precepts; fourth, explaining the substance of the three refuges; fifth, explaining the abandonment of sexual misconduct; sixth, explaining that marrying a wife is not an infraction; seventh, explaining the abandonment of falsehood; eighth, precluding abstaining solely from alcohol. Below is the first, explaining the time when the precepts arise. Everything up to "soka" is the sūtra text. Relying on the sūtra, it asks: Does one become an upāsaka merely by taking the three refuges without yet giving rise to the five precepts? Paramārtha says: "Mahānāma was the cousin of the Buddha and the elder brother of Aniruddha; when King Śuddhodana went forth, he entrusted the kingdom to him. The Buddha taught the method of the three refuges for Mahānāma."
