[On the phrase,] "Because herein there is no [...] able to be without a defiled mind": This is the answer. Because in drinking liquor there are no characteristics of a natural offense: for all natural offenses are practiced solely with a defiled mind and never involve any other mind, whereas drinking liquor to treat illness can be without a defiled mind; thus it is not a natural offense. Therefore, Nyāyānusāra 38 states: "Because herein there are no characteristics of a natural offense. What are the characteristics of a natural offense and a prescriptive offense? Before the precepts were formulated, those who were free from desire definitely would not perform it—such is the characteristic of a natural offense; if they still performed it, it is called a prescriptive offense. Furthermore, if it is performed solely on the basis of a defiled mind, it is the characteristic of a natural offense; if it is also performed on the basis of an undefiled mind, it is called a prescriptive offense."
