"It is traditionally said that where ... in some places it is also spoken of": an answer. The Vaibhāṣika masters say by tradition: where there are two kinds of ripening—namely intermediate existence and birth existence—and fully equipped with bodily, vocal, and mental karma, it is spoken of, not elsewhere. In the formless realm, there is birth [existence], but no intermediate existence, only mental [karma] and no bodily or vocal [karma]; therefore it is not spoken of. However, in some places the sūtras also speak of formless wholesome karma as white karma with white ripening; that is said on the basis of wholesome karma having agreeable fruits. Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "Yet the sūtras say that the dhyānas, the immeasurables, and the formless [attainments] are all called white actions with white ripening; that generally establishes the name 'white' based on purely pure, agreeable ripening."
