[On the phrase] “What is spoken of here … is metaphorically called an equal-outflow [result]” (niṣyanda-phala): because the equal-outflow [result] is somewhat hidden, it is now explained again. What is spoken of here as the term “equal-outflow result” does not exceed the retributive result (vipāka-phala) and the sovereign result (adhipati-phala). A short lifespan among humans, when viewed in relation to wholesome karma, is a retributive result; when viewed in relation to killing karma, it is a sovereign result. Its equal-outflow result does not exceed these two; upon these two results, on the basis of a slight resemblance, it is metaphorically called an equal-outflow. Saying “resemblance” means: one cut off another's life, causing their lifespan to be shortened, and having experienced retribution in hell, when coming to be born among humans, one's lifespan is again shortened. The lifespan being shortened is similar, hence it is called “resemblance.” In terms of this aspect of meaning, it is metaphorically called an equal-outflow, not a real equal-outflow. If it were a real equal-outflow, it would be produced from its own category. Another explanation: this text comprehensively explains the ten kinds of equal-outflow. What is spoken of here as the term “equal-outflow result” does not exceed the retributive result and the sovereign result. If the equal-outflow of killing is a retributive result and a sovereign result, the other nine equal-outflows are sovereign results. On the basis of a slight resemblance, they are metaphorically called equal-outflows. When it says that the other nine equal-outflows are metaphorically called sovereign [results], this is spoken generally from the perspective of the majority. If one distinguishes them in detail: among these nine, the two [courses of action] of body and the four of speech are only metaphorically called sovereign. If greed, hatred, and non-omnipresent wrong view are viewed in relation to augmenting the greed, hatred, and ignorance of other categories (nikāya), these are all metaphorically called equal-outflow upon the sovereign result. If greed and hatred are viewed in relation to augmenting greed and hatred of their own category, and omnipresent wrong view is viewed in relation to augmenting the ignorance of the five categories, these are real equal-outflows, not metaphorical.
