Regarding "The commentary says: ... is the reason there is no mortal offense": this explains the first two lines [of the verse]. Among the three obstacles, the uninterrupted karma (ānantarya-karma) occurs only among humans in the three continents; it does not occur in Uttarakuru, nor in the other four realms of rebirth, nor in the other two realms of existence. In the three continents where uninterrupted karma exists, only women and men commit uninterrupted karma, not ṣaṇḍhas and the like. "And the like" includes paṇḍakas, the asexual, and the dual-sexed. Thus the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 119, states: "Question: If a ṣaṇḍha, a paṇḍaka, an asexual person, or a dual-sexed person kills their father or mother, do they incur an uninterrupted [offense] or not? Answer: They do not." This is explained at length there. Why is this? The preceding text explained that such ṣaṇḍhas and the like lack the causes and conditions for severing good roots and for undisciplined conduct (asaṃvara); this very fact is the reason there is no mortal offense here.
