17.5

「前七是業至立業道名」者，釋下句。於十不善業道之中，前七體是業，身、語業性故；亦業之道，為彼思業所遊履故。由因等起身、語業思，託身、語業為境轉，故名業之道。上業是身、語業，下業是思業。業及業之道，總立業道名。

Regarding "The former seven are karma [...] the designation 'path of karma' is established": this explains the second line. Among the ten unwholesome paths of karma, the entities of the former seven are karma, because their nature is bodily and verbal karma; they are also paths of karma, because they are traversed by that karma of volition. Because the volition that serves as the causal originator of bodily and verbal karma proceeds taking bodily and verbal karma as its object, they are named the paths of karma. The first 'karma' is bodily and verbal karma; the second 'karma' is the karma of volition. Karma and the paths of karma are collectively given the designation 'path of karma'.
