Regarding "From differences in gratitude... those classes of beings of gratitude": this is the third, explaining differences in gratitude. That father, mother, teachers, and monks have gratitude can be known. For instance, the Bodhisattva Bear saved a man's life: in the past, a man entered the mountains to gather firewood and met with snow, hunger, and cold; the bear took him in and nourished him so his remaining life was preserved. When the weather cleared and the road opened, the man came down the mountain, met a hunter, pointed out the bear's place, and they came together to harm it. When dividing and taking the meat, his body was afflicted with a great disease, receiving a visible retribution in the present. This is fully cited from the sūtra in the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 114. For instance, the Bodhisattva Deer, whose horns were white as snow and whose fur had nine colors, also saved a man's life: in the past, a man was drifting and drowning in the water, surfacing and sinking; the deer entered the river to save him, and his life was preserved. The king sought this deer, offering a heavy reward to anyone who knew of it; the man pointed out its place. Just as they were about to kill the deer, the man broke out in leprosy, likewise receiving a retribution in the present. When the king questioned and learned the truth, he did not kill the deer, and consequently gave rise to the aspiration [for awakening]. This is as recounted in the Sūtra of the Nine-Colored Deer. Because of differences in gratitude, the results are distinguished. Therefore the Nyāyānusāra says: "Unwholesome actions generated toward those with gratitude have visible results that are obvious. By this inference we know that for the wholesome action of repaying gratitude, its result is certain."
