Regarding "If with a single preparatory effort [...] because they are composed of subtle particles": this is subsumed under the term "and so forth." The former master's intention says: it follows the stronger, and the vijñapti is one. If both are equally strong, as when with a single preparatory effort one kills both father and mother, two vijñaptis and two avijñaptis arise simultaneously. If both are equally weak, as when killing non-relatives, two vijñaptis and two avijñaptis also arise. The latter master's intention says: in all cases, two vijñaptis and two avijñaptis arise, the subtle particles of vijñapti being distinct in each case. Because there is vijñapti-karma, one can sever another's life; if vijñapti-karma were absent, how could another's life be severed? Thus the *Vibhāṣā* states: "Venerable Ghoṣaka said: 'All vijñapti-karmas are composed of subtle particles; the subtle particles for killing the mother and for the other are each distinct, so the offense of vijñapti is incurred with respect to the two persons.'" Furthermore, the *Dharmaskandha* states that when receiving the five precepts, five vijñaptis and five avijñaptis are obtained simultaneously; therefore, one knows that vijñapti and avijñapti karmas arise manifoldly together.
