18.7

「因受果名或能破故」者，答。虛誑語是因，所破僧是果，謂因虛誑語僧方破故。言虛誑語名破僧者，因受果名或能破故。謂僧是所破、虛誑語是能破、能破僧故名曰破僧、從用立名。

Regarding "Because the cause receives the name of the fruit, or because it can cause schism": this is the answer. False speech is the cause, and the schism of the Saṃgha is the fruit; that is, it is because of false speech that the Saṃgha is split. Saying that false speech is named "schism in the Saṃgha" is because the cause receives the name of the fruit, or because it can cause schism. That is, the Saṃgha is that which is split, and false speech is that which causes the split; because it can cause a schism in the Saṃgha, it is named "schism in the Saṃgha"—establishing the name from its function.
