"Although this is so, these phenomena... are definitely not abandoned by seeing": the answer. Three categories are briefly set out to demonstrate that they are not abandoned by seeing: first, unsoiled phenomena. *Xianzong* states: "'Unsoiled' means sāsrava wholesome [phenomena] and unobstructed neutral [phenomena]. Second, those not produced by the six [faculties]: that is, the five consciousnesses and so forth produced from the five faculties are termed 'not produced by the six.'" Although they also rely on the mental faculty (manas), this refers specifically to their distinct bases. "Third, matter (rūpa)." *Xianzong* states: "'Matter' refers to sāsrava soiled and unsoiled matter." Another explanation is given: all unsoiled phenomena, all phenomena not produced by the six, all material phenomena, and anāsrava phenomena are also logically and definitely not abandoned by seeing. Alternatively, *Xianzong* may be proceeding provisionally with reference to phenomena that are to be abandoned; that anāsrava phenomena are not abandoned is beyond doubt, and so they are not mentioned separately. One should know that here, when it is specifically stated that all unsoiled phenomena are definitely not abandoned by seeing, this is a particular formulation; it does not say that all that are soiled are abandoned by seeing. Among the soiled, those associated with the defilements of seeing (dṛṣṭi-kleśa) are abandoned by seeing, while the rest are abandoned by cultivation; because they are indeterminate, they are not mentioned. That what is not produced by the six is definitely not abandoned by seeing is a particular formulation; it does not say that all produced by the six are abandoned by seeing. Among those produced by the six, those associated with the defilements of seeing and so forth are abandoned by seeing, and the remaining sāsrava phenomena are abandoned by cultivation. If they are anāsrava, they are not abandoned; because they are indeterminate, they are not mentioned. That matter is definitely not abandoned by seeing is a particular formulation; it does not say that all non-matter is abandoned by seeing. Among non-matter, what is associated with the defilements of seeing and so forth is abandoned by seeing, and the remaining sāsrava phenomena are abandoned by cultivation. If they are anāsrava, they are not abandoned; because they are indeterminate, they are not mentioned.
