Regarding "Distracted means non-concentrated... conceptualization by reckoning": The reason reckoning is distracted and not in meditative concentration is explained in fascicle forty-two of the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, which states of discernment within concentration not being conceptualization by reckoning: "Although there is also discernment, it is not conceptualization by deliberation, because when one deliberates, one immediately emerges from concentration." Moreover, the *Nyāyānusāra* states: "Because within concentration one cannot reckon an object, whereas one who is not in concentration can turn toward an intentional object reckoning it thus and so; therefore, here concentration is excluded and distraction is selected." Question: Discernment conforms to reflection; reflection applies to both concentration and distraction; discernment should also apply to both. Why is reckoning solely distracted and not concentrated? Explanation: Distracted discernment reckons, and its conformity to reflection is strong. Concentrated discernment is subdued by concentration, and its conformity to reflection is not strong. Question: Since discernment is generated in reliance on concentration, concentration should conform to discernment; how can it subdue discernment so that it does not conform to reflection? Explanation: Discriminating the truths and so forth is indeed where concentration conforms to discernment; but where it resembles and conforms to reflection, concentration suppresses it. Question: When reflection arises within concentration, concentration cannot subdue it; how can it subdue discernment which merely resembles and conforms to reflection? Explanation: Reflection is intrinsic conceptualization; its very entity is named conceptualization. Discernment arises resembling and conforming to another, so its momentum is easily removed.
