On the passage "The treatise says [...] can cleave and be cleaved": According to the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 143: "Some say: These four āyatanas can cleave and are cleaved. Other teachers say: Solidity is what can cleave, and the four āyatanas are what is cleaved." However, there is no critical decision between them. This treatise agrees with the former teachers. Another explanation: saying that the four can cleave is based on their inseparability; saying that solidity can cleave is discussed strictly in terms of intrinsic entity. Each is based on one perspective, and in principle there is no contradiction. Although the nature of solidity is equally present in both agent and object, that whose functional activity is superior is called what can cleave, while that whose functional activity is inferior is called what is cleaved.
