Regarding 'Etc. means: if there is someone...' up to '...referring to excluding the preceding cases': this clarifies the four propositions of possession. The first proposition, 'born in the upper three dhyānas', indicates that one definitely possesses the eye; 'the eye-consciousness does not arise' indicates that one does not possess the consciousness. The second proposition, 'being born in the kāmadhātu', indicates that one definitely possesses the consciousness; 'not yet obtained or already lost' indicates that one does not possess the eye. The third proposition, 'being born in the kāmadhātu', indicates that one definitely possesses the consciousness; 'having obtained the eye and not lost it' further indicates that one possesses the eye. 'Those born in the Brahmā world' indicates that the eye and consciousness are definitely possessed. 'Born in the upper three dhyānas' indicates that one definitely possesses the eye. The words 'when directly seeing visible form' further indicate that one possesses the consciousness. Since it says 'when directly seeing visible form', it is clear that when a phenomenon is present, it is called possession.
