Regarding "However, the sūtra states: [...] should be known to be the same": this relates the Sautrāntika master citing the sūtra to explain the yokes. However, the sūtra states: What is the yoke of sensual desire? It refers to, among the objects of the five desires, giving rise to lust for sensual desire, giving rise to longing for sensual desire, giving rise to affectionate yearning for sensual desire, giving rise to clinging affection for sensual desire, giving rise to greedy pleasure for sensual desire, giving rise to infatuation for sensual desire, giving rise to indulge-attachment for sensual desire, giving rise to greedy craving for sensual desire, giving rise to delight for sensual desire, giving rise to hoarding attachment for sensual desire, giving rise to subsequent grasping for sensual desire, giving rise to greedy fixation for sensual desire. The twelve terms from lust onwards are all synonyms for greed. "Desire" refers to the objects of the five desires. Giving rise to greed taking desire as object, which entangles and oppresses the mind, is the general explanation of greed. This is called the sensual yoke; one should know that the sensual yoke has greed as its essence. Question: Why does the sūtra state synonyms at such length? The explanation is: either for those of dull faculties so that they understand according to any one of them; or for the forgetful so that they recall according to any one of them; or for different lands so that it is spoken according to local idiom; or to show skillful expression spoken through varied terms; or to show that a single meaning has many names. All various synonyms should be understood by analogy with this explanation. The existence-yoke and the view-yoke should be known to be the same, having greed as their essence. "Existence" refers to the body in the three existences; giving rise to greed taking existence as its object, it is called the existence-yoke. "Views" refers to the sixty-two views; giving rise to greed taking views as its object, it is called the view-yoke. The three—sensual desire, existence, and views—are all names of sensory objects; giving rise to greed taking these three objects as domain, they are therefore called the sensual yoke, existence-yoke, and view-yoke; hence all three have greed as their essence. It does not speak of the ignorance-yoke [in this way] because ignorance itself is the yoke, being named the ignorance-yoke as a karmadhāraya compound, having ignorance as its essence.
