"Moreover, it would clearly establish ... the existent must never perish": this shows the fault of being identical with the non-Buddhists. Because [the founder] was born during rain, he was given the name of Rain (Varṣā). His followers are therefore called the Rain-Host (Vārṣagaṇya), which refers to the Sāṃkhyas. Your insistence on fixed existence and non-existence would moreover clearly establish the false doctrine espoused by the Vārṣagaṇya non-Buddhists. They say that among the twenty-five principles (tattva), what exists must always exist, and what is not included among the principles is non-existent and must always be non-existent. The non-existent must never arise, because it lacks substantiality; the existent must never perish, because it possesses substantiality.
