[On the passage:] "The commentary says... then one possesses five": This explains the upper two lines, speaking of possession in terms of the stage of seeing. The main part can be understood. Question: As when one who has previously separated from desire enters into the path of seeing, reaching the subsequent knowledge of suffering and the forbearance of the dharma-knowledge of origin, why is universal knowledge not established? At that time the three conditions are also all fulfilled. Explanation: When this person who has previously separated from desire reaches the subsequent knowledge of suffering and the forbearance of the dharma-knowledge of origin, although they have already obtained the anāsrava acquisition of abandonment of what is abandoned by seeing suffering, the anāsrava acquisition of abandonment of what is abandoned by seeing origin is not yet possessed; therefore, universal knowledge is not established. Thus, for one who previously separated from desire and enters the path of seeing relying on a fundamental stage, they do not obtain the three kinds of universal knowledge abandoned by the path of seeing of the desire realm. What this text explains concerning possession relies on the threshold samādhi. If one enters the path of seeing relying on a fundamental [stage], one does not possess the three kinds of universal knowledge of seeing [the truths] in desire, but only possesses the two kinds of universal knowledge of seeing [the truths] in the upper [realms]. Therefore *Nyāyānusāra* (fascicle 56) states: "For one who enters into seeing the truths relying on a fundamental samādhi, upon reaching the forbearance of the subsequent knowledge of origin, there is also no universal knowledge. The subsequent stages should be considered rationally in accordance with the circumstances."
