"The treatise says... falling back from complete freedom from sensual desire": regarding 'abandoning one', this has three categories: first, falling back from the aśaikṣa [stage], wherever defilements of whichever realm arise, one abandons the comprehensive knowledge of the exhaustion of all fetters; second, falling back from the exhaustion of form-attachment and giving rise to form-realm defilement, one abandons the comprehensive knowledge of the exhaustion of form-attachment; third, when falling back from complete freedom from sensual desire and giving rise to sensual defilement, one abandons the comprehensive knowledge of the exhaustion of the five lower-tier fetters. As for the bodhisattva attaining bodhi in thirty-four thought-moments, he also abandons only one, the comprehensive knowledge of the exhaustion of the five lower-tier fetters, because at the cognition of categories regarding the path he only obtains the lower-tier factors and does not give rise to the superior path of fruition, and thus does not obtain the comprehensive knowledge of the exhaustion of form-attachment. If it is a person of the two vehicles attaining the fruit of non-learning, he abandons two.
