On the phrase “The treatise states… because it belongs only to the mental plane”: Greed among the desire-realm defilements is associated with joy and pleasure, because it operates in a joyous mode; it is not associated with dejection or pain, because it does not operate in a sorrowful mode. Because it pervades the six consciousnesses, it is associated with joy and pleasure. If in the five consciousnesses, it is associated with the pleasure faculty; if in mental consciousness, it is associated with the joy faculty. Hostility is associated with dejection and pain, because it operates in a sorrowful mode; it is not associated with joy or pleasure, because it does not operate in a joyous mode. Because it pervades the six consciousnesses, it is associated with dejection and pain. If in the five consciousnesses, it is associated with the pain faculty; if in mental consciousness, it is associated with the dejection faculty. Ignorance is universally associated with the preceding four feelings of joy, pleasure, dejection, and pain: because it operates in a joyous mode, it is associated with joy and pleasure; because it operates in a sorrowful mode, it is associated with dejection and pain. Because it pervades the six consciousnesses, it is associated with the four feelings. If in the five consciousnesses, it is associated with the pain and pleasure faculties; if in mental consciousness, it is associated with joy and dejection. Wrong view is associated generally with dejection and joy: because it operates in a joyous mode, it is associated with the joy faculty; because it operates in a sorrowful mode, it is associated with the dejection faculty. Because it belongs only to the mental plane, it is associated with dejection and joy; because it does not belong to the five consciousnesses, it is not associated with pain or pleasure.
