On the phrase “The treatise states… because they belong only to the mental plane”: This explains the first three lines. Among the secondary defilements, the six kinds—envy, regret, anger, spite, harm, and resentment—are all associated with the dejection faculty, because they operate in a sorrowful mode. They are not associated with joy, because they do not operate in a joyous mode. Because they belong only to the mental plane, they are associated with the dejection faculty. Because they do not belong to the five consciousnesses, they are not associated with pain. Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: “Other masters say: Spite is associated with joy, because being an outgrowth of the attachment to views, it should operate in a joyous mode.”
