Regarding "The Śāstra says... their characteristics should be differentiated": this explains the nine fetters. A fetter (saṃyojana) means to bind. Here, the fetter of attachment means greed of the three realms; the characteristics of the remaining eight should be differentiated as appropriate. Thus the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 50, states: "Question: What do these nine fetters have as their intrinsic nature? Answer: They have one hundred entities as their intrinsic nature. That is, the fetters of attachment, pride, and ignorance each have the five categories across the three realms, making forty-five entities. The fetter of hatred has only the five categories of the desire realm, making five entities. The fetter of view has eighteen entities: that is, the view of an existing self and the view of extreme grasping, each abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering across the three realms, make six; wrong views have four categories across the three realms, making twelve entities. The fetter of grasping has eighteen entities: that is, the grasping of views has four categories across the three realms, making twelve entities; the grasping of precepts and vows, abandoned by seeing the truths of suffering and the path across the three realms, makes six entities. The fetter of doubt has four categories across the three realms, making twelve entities. The fetters of jealousy and stinginess are each abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, making two entities. Thus, these nine fetters have one hundred entities as their intrinsic nature."
