Regarding "Whoever wishes to cultivate... temporarily pacified and permanently eliminated": from here below is the second section, which broadly explains the seven preliminary applications (prayoga). Within this: first, explaining the purification of the bodily vessel; second, explaining the stage of the fivefold pacification; third, explaining the four applications of mindfulness (smṛtyupasthāna); fourth, explaining the four roots of goodness (kuśalamūla). This is the first, explaining the purification of the bodily vessel. In the verse text, the first single line indicates the first cause; the next five lines indicate the second cause; the final six lines indicate the third cause. Within the second cause, the first line poses the topic, and the subsequent four lines explain it. Within the explanation, the first two lines present what is to be countered (pratipakṣya), and the subsequent two lines reveal the counteracting remedies (pratipakṣa). Within the third cause, the first two lines reveal the intrinsic nature, and the subsequent four lines establish its intention.
