Regarding "Because the causes of pleasure... only then does its characteristic become evident": the other school responds with reason. Because all causes of pleasure are variable, this demonstrates there is no real pleasure. Namely, with regard to things such as clothing: if used according to the proper time and without excess, sentient beings accept them as causes of pleasure. If these are used out of season or excessively, they immediately give rise to suffering and again become causes of suffering. For example, wearing a fur robe in summer or unlined hemp in winter; eating again repeatedly when already sated with food and drink; seeking cold on a cold day, or seeking heat when hot; these are all called out-of-season consumption, and things like clothing, food, cold, and heat then give rise to suffering and become causes of suffering. Even if such clothing and the like are used at the proper time, if they are used excessively they immediately give rise to suffering and become causes of suffering. It is not appropriate that a cause of pleasure, at the stage of increase and excessive use, or even when balanced without increase or decrease, simply by being out of season becomes a cause of suffering and produces suffering. Therefore, we know that clothing and the like are fundamentally causes of suffering; when suffering is slight it is not perceived, and only when suffering increases and flourishes does its characteristic become evident, whereupon one perceives suffering.
