As for "That is, if one has not yet encountered... a cause capable of producing pleasure": this explains the first section. "Weariness" means fatigue; "desire" means sexual desire; or it means fatigue from sexual desire. Food remedies hunger; drink remedies thirst; warmth remedies cold; coolness remedies heat; resting, sitting, and lying down remedy weariness and desire. That is, if one has not yet been afflicted by the suffering of hunger and the like, an awareness of pleasure does not arise with respect to the various causes of pleasure such as food. It is only when afflicted by the suffering of hunger and the like that an awareness of pleasure arises with respect to the causes of pleasure such as food. Therefore, regarding the causes such as food that remedy severe suffering like hunger, the foolish ordinary person falsely imagines that this cause of light suffering is able to produce pleasure; in reality, there is no definite cause that produces pleasure.
