As for "First, because the causes of pleasure... is established as a definite principle": from here on is the first refutation: that causes of pleasure are indefinite. The causes of suffering and pleasure are definite as causes due to the assembly of internal and external causes and conditions being different before and after, not merely due to the external object. "Basis" means the basis of the physical body. "State" means the earlier and later states. "Distinction" means differing before and after. Or "adverse cause" means a cause that does not ripen pleasantly. The remaining text and metaphors can be understood upon reflection.
