"However, all who have previously abandoned [...] definitely accomplish the pleasure faculty": However, all who have previously abandoned from one to five grades and so forth of the defilements of the desire realm abandoned by cultivation, upon reaching the attainment of the fruit, will definitely give rise to the path of the superior fruit in this very life before passing away; none will ever pass away without having given rise to it. He then cites proof, stating: "Because of this, if in the stage of an ordinary person one previously detached from the defilements of the lower three dhyānas and later entered darśana-mārga relying on a lower stage, having attained the fruit, in the present life they will definitely be able to induce the subsequent path of the superior fruit. Were it otherwise, when a noble one is born in stages from the fourth dhyāna upward, it should not be said that they definitely accomplish the pleasure faculty (sukhindriya). Yet the fundamental treatises all state that a noble one born in a higher stage definitely accomplishes the pleasure faculty; therefore we know that in this body they can definitely give rise to the subsequent path of the superior fruit." "The path of the superior fruit" is the path of direction toward the subsequent fruit; because it is superior to the prior fruit, it is called the path of the superior fruit. Or, the subsequent fruit is called superior, and because this path tends toward it, it is called the path of the superior fruit. Question: Is the arising of the path of the superior fruit sudden or gradual? Answer: It arises gradually, not suddenly. Thus the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 171, states: "Is there any gradual attainment of the four anāsrava dhyānas? Answer: Yes. Because a noble one detaches from the defilements of lower stages, and there are times when they gradually attain them upon giving rise to the path of the superior fruit." It also states: "Is there any gradual attainment of the three anāsrava formless absorptions? Answer: Yes. Because they detach from the defilements of lower stages, and there are times when they gradually attain them upon giving rise to the path of the superior fruit."
