Regarding the passage [beginning with] "Does this name 'stream-enterer' [...] ought to be called a stream-enterer?": This is a question. What meaning does this name "stream-enterer" designate? If it means first attaining the noble path, then the name "stream-enterer" should designate the eighth [person]. The "eighth" refers to the candidate for stream-entry. Counting from the last toward the first among the four candidates and four fruits, the first candidate is the eighth. Therefore the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 46, states: "The eighth noble one refers to the follower by faith and the follower by Dharma; counting from the superior, this is the eighth." Another explanation: Counting backward among the eight patiences, the patience with the Dharma of suffering is the eighth; therefore the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states that the path of seeing is called the stage of the eighth person. If [the name] designates first attaining a fruit, then when one detached from half [of desire] or wholly detached from desire reaches the subsequent knowledge of the path and attains the fruit of once-returner or the fruit of non-returner, this is also a first attainment and ought to be called stream-entry.
