Regarding 'Pene- means definitive severance... factors leading to penetration': this is the answer. 'Pene-' means definitive severance; '-tration' means selection. Definitive severance and selection refer to the noble paths, which have wisdom (prajñā) as their essential nature. Because the noble paths are able to sever doubt, they are called definitive severance; and because they can distinguish the characteristics of the four truths, they are called selection. 'Factor' means part. The intent of this statement is to clarify that what they accord with is solely a part—the path of seeing—and not the definitive severance of the path of cultivation or the path of no-more-learning. The noble path comprises three kinds in total, namely the three parts of seeing, cultivation, and no-more-learning; the path of seeing is solely one part of definitive severance, and thus it obtains the name 'factor of penetration' (nirvedhabhāga). These four roots of good can serve as superior conditions to induce the factors of penetration and accord with and benefit them; therefore they obtain the name 'according with that' (nirvedhabhāgīya). 'According with' is the cause, and 'factor of penetration' is the fruit; named after both cause and fruit, these are therefore called the factors leading to penetration.
