Regarding "However, it should also be stated … or exceeding this": this resolves an implicit objection. The implicit objection means: In the verse, one also should not state the final condition, [namely] abandoning three or four grades, because by logical implication one would also know that one undergoes three or two rebirths. To resolve this implicit objection, these words are spoken. However, that three or two rebirths should indeed be stated is because there are differences in advancement: when abandoning afflictions, with respect to the rebirths undergone, they may be fewer than three or two rebirths, there may be no three or two rebirths, or they may exceed these three or two rebirths. For example, undergoing one rebirth or undergoing half a rebirth is called "fewer"; attaining parinirvāṇa in the desire realm right in the present life is called "none"; progressing upward and undergoing four or more rebirths is called "exceeding this." Therefore, the text of the verse separately states the rebirths undergone, which is not like the second [condition of] accomplishing the anāsrava faculties.
