"The sūtra expounds this [...] eighty-nine kinds" explains the lower two lines. The sūtra speaks in terms of a specific intention that the varieties of this fruition entity are four. The treatise, relying on the characteristics of phenomena, holds that in reality, according to stages, there are eighty-nine, all having the path of liberation and analytical cessation as their nature. That is to say, for the permanent abandonment of the defilements abandoned by seeing, there are eight uninterrupted paths of patience and eight paths of liberation of knowledge. And for the permanent abandonment of the defilements abandoned by cultivation in the nine stages, there are nine grades in each, making nine times nine, or eighty-one uninterrupted paths and eighty-one paths of liberation. All uninterrupted paths in the stages of seeing and cultivation are solely of the nature of śramaṇaship, not fruits of śramaṇaship, because they can sever obstructions and induce subsequent arisings. The various paths of liberation are of the nature of śramaṇaship and are also the saṃskṛta fruition entity of śramaṇaship, because they are the fruit of outflow (niṣyanda-phala) and the fruit of human exertion (puruṣakāra-phala) induced by that uninterrupted [path]. Although the path of liberation also induces the uninterrupted [path], because it does not induce it universally and because it does not sever obstructions, the uninterrupted [path] is not said to be the fruit of liberation. Each analytical cessation is solely the asaṃskṛta fruition entity of śramaṇaship; it is the fruit of disjunction (visaṃyoga-phala) and fruit of human exertion of that uninterrupted path, which is precisely the "non-arising fruit of exertion" in the Nyāyānusāra. Stated generally like this, they combine to make eighty-nine kinds of fruits of śramaṇaship.
