Regarding “First, the intermediate-attainer [...] without the fault of confusion”: this is the answer. The intermediate-attainer is divided into three: first, swift; second, not swift; third, taking a long time to attain parinirvāṇa. The simile of the three sparks of fire should be understood as before. Therefore the Nyāyānusāra states: “From first arising, attaining parinirvāṇa at a far, near, or future birth place. The at-rebirth-attainer is also threefold: attaining parinirvāṇa upon rebirth, with effort (sābhisaṃskāra), or without effort (anabhisaṃskāra). The upward-streamer is also threefold: because there are distinctions of total leaper, half-leaper, and dying-everywhere. Three triads being not singular is called ‘the several triads’. However, all of these several triads are divided into nine kinds through attaining parinirvāṇa swiftly, not swiftly, or taking a long time. In mutual comparison there is no fault of confusion: the intermediate triad is swift, the rebirth triad is not swift, and the upward-streamer triad takes a long time; with respect to these three triads, each is divided into three kinds: swift, not swift, and taking a long time.”
