"Other masters say: [...] project the five Śuddhāvāsa": other masters say that by virtue of the gradual predominance of the five [faculties] beginning with faith, the five Śuddhāvāsa are projected. That is to say: sometimes the faculty of faith is predominant in mixedly cultivating the dhyānas, up to sometimes the faculty of wisdom is predominant in mixedly cultivating the dhyānas; following these distinctions, the five Śuddhāvāsa are projected, and therefore they are only five. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā states: "Question: How many grades are there in the mixed cultivation of the lower three dhyānas? Some say: there are only three grades, namely inferior, middling, and superior, because the lower stages do not have the five Śuddhāvāsa as their fruit. According to the definitive statement, there are also five grades. Question: Since they do not have the five fruits, why do they have a cause of five grades? Answer: Although they do not have the five fruits, the dharma of those absorptions has five grades. Furthermore, although the lower stages do not have the five Śuddhāvāsa as their fruit, they have five grades of faculties. Question: Raising an argument based on the doctrine: since the lower three dhyānas have five grades of mixed cultivation, for what reason do they not have the five Śuddhāvāsa as their fruit? Answer: Just as it is not the proper cause, nor the proper receptacle, and so on in detail. Furthermore, the noble ones seek rebirth in the Śuddhāvāsa because they loathe places where they would be reborn together with ordinary worldlings (pṛthagjana); if the lower stages had Śuddhāvāsa, then they would not be able to turn away with revulsion from places shared with ordinary worldlings, because they have not yet separated from defilement with respect to higher places. Furthermore, the noble ones seek rebirth in the Śuddhāvāsa because they loathe places of calamity; since in the lower three stages there are calamities in all of them, there are no Śuddhāvāsa" (as explained in detail there). Question: When a noble one is born into the Śuddhāvāsa, do they generate projecting karma (ākṣepaka-karma)? The explanation is: since this treatise states that perfuming and cultivating the sāsrava causes it to project the Śuddhāvāsa, we clearly know that the noble ones do generate projecting karma. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā states that the karma of the mixedly-cultivated dhyānas, as a fruitional cause (vipāka-hetu), projects the group-homogeneity (nikāya-sabhāga) of the five Śuddhāvāsa.
