[On the passage] from "Third, by undergoing rebirth" down to "three or two births": the third condition is by undergoing rebirth, namely by further undergoing three or two rebirths in desire existence. If one severs three grades, one further undergoes three rebirths; if one severs four grades, one further undergoes two rebirths. Since there is no dying and being reborn in the interval of severing one, two, or five grades, there is no kulaṃkula of five rebirths, four rebirths, one rebirth, or half a rebirth. Question: Do noble persons create projecting karma? Explanation: If we follow the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 64, it says: "These three or two rebirths are karma that was created and augmented in the state of an ordinary worldling, inducing three or two births. Noble persons in the noble state cannot further newly create karma that projects a future existence, because they have turned their backs on saṃsāra and are heading toward nirvāṇa. Because of this, the sūtra states: 'Noble persons only experience old karma; they do not further experience new [karma].'" Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 53, explaining kulaṃkula and ekavīcika, says: "Question: Do noble persons create projecting karma for the nikāya-sabhāga of the desire realm? Some say: They do not. Why? The desire realm has many faults and many calamities; therefore noble persons do not create projecting karma for the nikāya-sabhāga of the desire realm, but only create fulfilling karma for the nikāya-sabhāga of the desire realm. Some say: Noble persons also create projecting karma for the nikāya-sabhāga of the desire realm." Although there are two explanations, there is no evaluative judgment. Moreover, the Nyāyānusāra agrees with the former explanation. Question: If noble persons do not create projecting karma, how can they be reborn in those five Śuddhāvāsa heavens? Explanation: Saying that they do not create it is spoken based on the desire realm. 'Only experiencing old karma' should be known to be likewise. Question: If even the roots of goodness conducive to penetration (nirvedhabhāgīya) do not create projecting karma, how now upon reaching the noble state could they create projecting karma? Explanation: The roots of goodness conducive to penetration hate and turn their backs on existence, proceed toward the path of seeing, and accord with the path of seeing; therefore they only create fulfilling karma and do not create projecting karma. The noble state is not like this, so it is admissible that they create projecting karma. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 64, states: "Question: Why do some noble persons die having been separated from attachment, while ordinary worldlings do not? Answer: Because noble persons possess anāsrava concentration, which upholds the continuum and makes it extremely solid. Ordinary worldlings only possess worldly concentrations, which uphold the continuum without making it extremely solid." It is extensively explained as in that text.
