[The phrase] "Having explained the third […] attains the aśaikṣa fruit of arhatship" introduces the fourth section below, which clarifies the candidate for and fruit of arhatship. Within this: first, clarifying the distinctions between the candidate and the fruit; second, taking occasion of the treatise to clarify the counteracting path; third, clarifying the knowledge of exhaustion and the subsequent knowledge; fourth, incidentally clarifying the path and its fruit; fifth, clarifying the six lineages. This is the first, clarifying the distinctions between the candidate and the fruit: 1. concluding the prior, 2. generating the following, 3. explaining with verses. In the verses, the first verse and a half clarifies the candidate, and the last two lines clarify the fruit. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 65, states: "Question: Why are two fruits of the recluse established based on detachment from the kāmadhātu—namely, the once-returner and non-returner fruits—while only one fruit of the recluse is established based on detachment from the rūpadhātu and ārūpyadhātu, namely, the fruit of arhatship? [Answer:] Furthermore, because the kāmadhātu is difficult to abandon, difficult to shatter, and difficult to cross over, two fruits are established upon detachment from it. Because the rūpadhātu and ārūpyadhātu are easy to abandon, easy to shatter, and easy to cross over, only one fruit is established upon detachment from them (as fully explained there)." It also states: "Question: Why is one fruit of the recluse established based on detachment from defilements abandoned by seeing, whereas the latter three fruits of the recluse are established based on detachment from defilements abandoned by cultivation? Answer: Because defilements abandoned by seeing are easy to depart from, the initial single fruit of the recluse is established when departing from them. Because defilements abandoned by cultivation are difficult to depart from, the latter three fruits of the recluse are established when departing from them."
