[The phrase] "Some say this samādhi […] twenty-four" is the second master's explanation. Some say: this samādhi differs in terms of knowledges, aspects, and objects. Subsumed under the unarrived [concentration] there are eighty kinds: namely, the subsequent knowledge of the path taking the paths of the eight stages as objects also separately possesses four corresponding aspects—four times eight being thirty-two. Among these, four are excluded because they were already included in the previous fifty-two. Thus, twenty-eight are added to the previous fifty-two, making eighty kinds. Just as eighty kinds are subsumed under the unarrived [concentration], the intermediate dhyāna and the four dhyānas should be understood to be likewise. In the sphere of infinite space there are forty: excluding the dharma-knowledges of cessation and the path, and the four subsequent knowledges of cessation and four subsequent knowledges of the path taking the four dhyānas as objects—excluding in total ten knowledges, each separately possessing four aspects, four times ten being forty—out of the eighty, there are only forty. In the sphere of infinite consciousness there are thirty-two: from the aforementioned forty, further excluding the eight aspects of the subsequent knowledges of cessation and the path taking the sphere of infinite space as object, there are only thirty-two. In the sphere of nothingness there are twenty-four: from the aforementioned thirty-two, further excluding the eight aspects of the subsequent knowledges of cessation and the path taking the sphere of infinite consciousness as object, there are only twenty-four.
