"However, as for Godhika […] the fruit of the arhat": the Sautrāntika further explains the sūtra. Why it is necessary to explain this scriptural text: the Sarvāstivāda's intention is that there was an arhat named Godhika who, because of dull faculties, fell away six times from being an arhat, and upon attaining the fruit of the arhat for the seventh time, fearing he would fall away again, took his own life with a knife. Therefore [the Sautrāntika] now explains: however, as for Godhika's falling away six times, formerly in the stage of a trainee (śaikṣa), he relished the temporary liberation of contaminated absorption intensely and was also of dull faculties; thus he fell away six times, deeply reproached himself, and took his own life with a knife. Because he had no longing or attachment to his body and life, when approaching the end of his life for the seventh time, he attained the state of an arhat and entered parinirvāṇa. Therefore, Godhika only fell away from contaminated absorption in the stage of a trainee, and did not fall away from the fruit of the arhat. Godhika belonged to the cowherd lineage. Paramārtha also says: "Godhika is translated here as 'earthen vessel' (ghatika); he was originally an outsider who always carried an earthen vessel with him, and was named after this original [habit]."
