"In fact, what is stated later […] so the statement has no fault": the Sautrāntika explains the sūtra. In fact, what is stated later—or what is stated in the later text of the Charcoal Simile Sūtra—namely, having already been able to vomit up completely and having already attained coolness, is an arhat. However, the noble disciples in the earlier text of the Charcoal Simile cited by them have not yet thoroughly comprehended the principle of the Four Noble Truths when walking or standing, and sometimes lose mindfulness and give rise to unwholesome thoughts; this may indeed happen. That is, trainees—once-returners and non-returners—who have attained those two fruits through the worldly path, may give rise to defilement when walking or standing because of losing mindfulness. Later, when they sever the remaining defilements of cultivation through noble wisdom and accomplish the fruit of the aśaikṣa, thoroughly comprehending the principle of the Truths, there is no sense of [defilements] arising. The previously cited scriptural text speaks of falling away with respect to the stage of a trainee, so there is no fault; or [it refers to] what is stated in the earlier text of the Charcoal Simile Sūtra.
