[The phrase] "By the power of the noble path [...] [the Vaibhāṣikas] do not accept this doctrine" is the Sautrāntika reply: By the power of the noble path during this meditation, the seeds of conventional cognition are perfumed and cultivated so that they become superior; upon emerging from meditation, a superior conventional cognition having the truths as its object becomes manifest, superior to that of former days. While still within meditation, by the power of the noble path one attains the basis for the arising of this post-meditative conventional cognition—the basis being precisely the seeds; hence one is said to have attained this post-meditative conventional cognition. This is speaking of the cause having attained [the state of fruition] as attaining the fruit, just as obtaining a gold mine, which is the cause, is called obtaining the gold, which is the fruit. Alternatively, one attains the bodily support from which this conventional cognition arises, and hence is said to have attained this fruit of conventional cognition. One ought to say 'seeds', but because the Vaibhāṣikas do not believe in seeds, one says 'bodily support', since those seeds are not separate from the body. Or again, one attains the noble path which is the cause upon which this conventional cognition arises, and hence is said to have attained this subsequent fruit of conventional cognition. Although they say this, the Vaibhāṣikas do not accept this doctrine.
