[The phrase] "Severing that which is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm [...] suffering, origination, cessation, and the path" explains the third and fourth lines. In the nine uninterrupted paths and eight paths of liberation that sever what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, the conventional cognition, the cognitions of the four truths, and the Dharma cognition are cultivated in the present as appropriate. In all uninterrupted paths that sever the higher seven levels, the cognitions of the four truths, the subsequent cognition, the conventional cognition, and the Dharma cognitions of cessation and path are cultivated in the present as appropriate. In the preparatory paths for severing the desire realm and the paths of special progression with desire—the phrase 'with desire' indicating that the severance of afflictions is not yet complete, which refers to the preceding eight paths of special progression—conventional cognition, the cognitions of the four truths, Dharma cognition, and subsequent cognition are cultivated in the present as appropriate. The paths of liberation, preparation, and special progression are the paths other than the uninterrupted; on these, in the future one always cultivates seven cognitions: conventional cognition, Dharma cognition, subsequent cognition, and the cognitions of suffering, origination, cessation, and the path. Because present cultivation differs, they were enumerated separately before; because future cultivation is identical, they are stated together.
