Regarding "The sūtra says: 'What is this mind inwardly gathered? ... having insight without calm abiding'": the Sautrāntika master replies. The sūtra says: "How is this mind inwardly gathered? It refers to when the mind operates together with lethargy (styāna) or operates together with torpor (middha). Or, inwardly associated, having calm abiding (śamatha) without insight (vipaśyanā), namely, the formless absorptions." Or, where it says "inwardly," it refers to within the internal mind, not necessarily in concentration. Because in the Sautrāntika view concentration and wisdom do not arise simultaneously, it therefore says "having calm abiding without insight." Such types are all called inwardly gathered. "What is outwardly distracted? It refers to the mind roaming through the five objects such as visible form, scattering and drifting along with them. Or, inwardly associated, having insight without calm abiding, namely, the preliminary and intermediate [absorptions]." Or, where it says "inwardly," it refers to within the internal mind, not necessarily in concentration. Because in the Sautrāntika view concentration and wisdom do not arise simultaneously, it therefore says "having insight without calm abiding." Such types are all called outwardly distracted.
