On the passage "In actual principle, fearlessness ... its essential nature is just knowledge": This is the author's explanation. In actual principle, fearlessness is accomplished by knowledge; knowledge is the cause, and fearlessness is the result, so one should not say that its essential nature is just knowledge. Therefore the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 75, says: "How can one say that fearlessness is just knowledge? One should say that fearlessness is accomplished by knowledge. In actual principle it should be so, but merely in order to show that fearlessness takes knowledge as its immediate proximate cause, the essential nature of fearlessness is identified in terms of knowledge. Fearlessness means absence of dread; because one has knowledge, one does not dread others, and therefore knowledge can serve as the causal nature of fearlessness." Another interpretation says: The author states the Sautrāntika explanation that apart from knowledge there is a separate entity for fearlessness. If the Nyāyānusāra says it exists separately from knowledge, what is its essential nature?
