27.39

「唯佛於此至得不共名」者，答。唯佛於此弟子歡、戚，不但惑除并習亦斷，故名不共。聲聞猶有歡、戚習故。或諸一切出家弟子，皆隨屬佛有順、有違及有順違，應甚歡、戚。佛能不起，可謂希奇。非屬諸聲聞不起歡、戚，非奇特故。諸聲聞等雖有弟子，但相依住非真隨屬。若真隨屬唯佛大師，故唯在佛得不共名。

On the passage "Only a Buddha, in regard to this ... obtains the designation 'unshared'": This is the answer. Only in a Buddha, regarding these disciples' [behaviours causing] joy or sadness, are not only afflictions abandoned but their latencies (vāsanā) are also severed; therefore they are called unshared. Disciples still possess the latencies for joy and sadness. Alternatively, all the ordained disciples are followers of the Buddha, and whether they are compliant, rebellious, or both, this should evoke great joy or sadness; that the Buddha is able not to give rise to them may be called extraordinary. If those who do not belong to the disciples do not cause them to give rise to joy or sadness, that is not extraordinary. Although the disciples have their own followers, they merely depend on one another and are not true followers. A true follower belongs only to the Buddha, the Great Teacher; therefore only in the Buddha do they obtain the designation 'unshared.'
